The most common resume mistakes aren't typos - they're structural. Fix these seven and watch your interview rate climb.
You send 50 applications and hear back on two. It's rarely bad luck - it's usually the resume. Here are seven silent killers.
1. Leading with an objective statement
"Seeking a challenging role where I can grow…" Recruiters skip this every time. Replace it with a 2–3 sentence summary anchored to the target role.
2. Listing responsibilities instead of results
"Managed a team of five" says nothing. "Led a team of five to ship v2 six weeks ahead of schedule, driving $1.2M in incremental ARR" tells the story.
3. Overloading skills
Twenty-five bullet points under "Skills" signals nothing. Pick the 8–12 that match the JD and prove them elsewhere in the resume.
4. Weak action verbs
"Helped", "assisted", "worked on" - dilute your ownership. Use "led", "shipped", "architected", "cut", "grew".
5. Formatting that breaks the ATS
Icons, columns, headshots, colored bars. Beautiful in Figma, invisible after parsing.
6. Not tailoring
The single biggest lever. A tailored resume outperforms a polished generic one 4:1.
7. No cover letter
Cover letters aren't dead - they're a tiebreaker. A 3-paragraph, role-specific letter costs you 2 minutes and doubles your callback rate.
